While some people experience diarrhoea, around 7 per cent of people in clinical trials reported experiencing constipation. This side effect can occur because the medication slows down stomach emptying. It's more common at the start of treatment but tends to decrease as you continue.
Until it improves, here are some general tips that might assist you in managing constipation:
Increase water intake
Aim for 2.5 to 3 litres of water daily.
Increase your fibre intake
Add more fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds to your diet.
Avoid foods like dairy, rice, bananas, white bread, and processed items.
Drink a hot beverage in the morning
Start your day with a hot drink like coffee, tea, or warm water with lemon.
Respond to bowel urges
Don't delay toileting when you feel the urge for a bowel movement.
Regular exercise
Incorporate regular physical activity into your routine.
Over the counter treatments for constipation, such as senna or lactulose, can also help.
